A. in the hammock by the chicken house
Late late summer in Southern Vermont. Gold sun on goldenrod, ten-foot jungle of green corn swaying behind the last beds of basil and tomatoes.
We’re thriving on fresh peaches, apples and plums. Perhaps that’s why A. came to find me and confess her first potty experience with diarrhea. After extensive clean-up in the sink, both girls are relaxing in front of Max and Ruby. Before whipping up some Mac n’cheese, I’ll take a moment to jot down my current obsessions:
1. Tarte 4-day lash stain (semi-permanent mascara for the lazy mom–promising to make your lashes “naturally full and dark for four days.” Works even better than it sounds). No, I’m not doing a paid product endorsement, but would if I could.
2. Cortland apples eaten straight from the tree, crisp and tart-sweet from the orchard up the road
3. Joanna Weiss: brilliant, witty, on-the-mark columnist for The Boston Globe. Her parenting columns appear bi-monthly in the Globe’s Voices section. She tackles all the nitty-gritty dilemmas of modern parenting: sleeping arrangements, breastfeeding, celebrity pregnancies, whining, mom fashion, the phenomenon of “bad-parent” memoirs, and much more. Her pieces include sharp interviews and fascinating information that gives a larger cultural perspective on her personal experience as a mother.
I feel she is a kindred spirit. Our oldest children are both girls named Ava.
Yes, I am also jealous– I wish I had her job. Maybe someday?
(p.s. Apologies for the weird purple photo. My digital camera finally kicked the bucket)
