Snow Soup

How could I forget that I love snow?

Last night, the first snowfall of the winter turned our gray-brown world into a wonderland.  Today sunlight glistened through white lacy branches. The promise of transformation.

“Snow is magical!” exclaimed A.

To my delight, she couldn’t wait to get out and play in it.  She got dressed, then put her snowsuit, hat and mittens on herself.

I hunted frantically for a pair boots that might fit this year (buried in a plastic bin in the attic).  What a miracle!  Not only does A. WANT to go OUTSIDE in the cold, she can actually DRESS HERSELF to do so.  I said prayers to the gods of growing up, who must have known I was short on patience.

Now I see why they say The Baby Cave lasts until age 4.  I feel not one twinge of nostalgia about being halfway out of that Cave.

C, on the other hand, was busy destroying our belongings.  She broke the TV remote so T. couldn’t watch football, then stirred mayonnaise into my freshly homemade applesauce.

I’d been feeling proud that I spent Sunday morning (uncharacteristically imitating a good Vermont homemaker), making sauce out of some soft Cortland apples I found at the back of the fridge.  Usually I would have composted these babies, but I put them in a pot with some cinnamon sticks, boiled them down, and strained them into sweet, pink sauce.

Perfection.  Until C. managed to spoon half a jar of MAYO in it while I sat down with my back turned to eat a tuna sandwich. My fault for leaving jar out. If only it had been yogurt.

“CARMEN, NO!!” I hollered.  ”You ruined my applesauce!”  I felt personally affronted.

C’s face crumpled.  ”Daddy!” she screamed, her usual cry when Mommy loses her temper and yells at her naughtiness. Lately we are adversaries, my 2-year-old and I.

At least we enjoyed sledding, snow angels, and Snow Soup together.
